Location intelligence in Healthcare

Hospitals are a complex ecosystem, the effective operation of which demands that healthcare staff, ancillary staff and patients move between designated spaces for defined tasks in a way that is carefully timed and managed. This is done against a backdrop of continuous change management.

The movement of outpatients, staff and visitors through a hospital campus is currently managed in an inefficient way, without the benefit of real-time spatial communication and data to support interaction and decision making by operators or users. Introducing these tools into the out-patient journey, for example, not only reduces stress but significantly reduces the volume of missed and delayed appointments whilst reducing staff time committed to ad-hoc directions and error corrections. Providing immediate updates on digital maps alongside detailed real-time and historic location and routing information delivers improved decision making in the management and use of the hospital campus environment. This ensures patients are handled efficiently, and are given live information on where they need to be when, how to get there, the distance, route and time it will take to get there.

Simultaneously providing these tools to both patients and staff ensures enormous benefits and cost savings. In a 2015 survey of over 300 doctors, more than half reported getting lost on their way to a code blue. At the same time, an estimated 15% of missed appointments result from out-patients unable to find the right room in time, costing the NHS up to an estimated £1bn / annum.

In parallel, management of physical assets can improve patient care and control costs in measurable ways. After deployment of asset tracking, a large NHS Trust recognised savings on equipment spending of over £340,000 in the first year alone.

Living Map brings a full suite of digital mapping and location technologies which can be easily integrated into existing infrastructure and patient record solutions to provide a layer of geospatial communication and location tracking to the healthcare ecosystem.

Asset Tracking

Missing assets in hospitals and allocation of assets such as beds can have a significant negative impact on time and efficiency. By tracking vital hospital assets in order to better allocate resources and track the distribution of equipment with real-time alerts, hospitals can increase efficiency and improve patient care.

Wayfinding

Living Map’s indoor/outdoor mapping and routing products provide a flexible intuitive solution for hospital wayfinding. The solution can be deployed in a variety of ways for any interface type (digital signs, kiosks, web, mobile, etc.) ranging from basic QR codes on physical signage providing routes to destinations in a web map when scanned with a mobile camera, to deep mobile app integrations providing curated routing for individuals based on appointment schedules as informed by integrations with appointment-management systems – or anything in between.

Patient/Staff Tracking

Dispatching staff for patient care and administrative tasks such as a porter for patient transfer or discharge is currently handled in an inefficient way with no regard for the proximity of staff to patients. There is also limited visibility into the amount of time nurses and doctors spend at the bedside and how this impacts outcomes for specific patient groups.

Creating smart staff dispatch tools can significantly improve efficiency and productivity.

Tracking staff interactions with patients can provide valuable insight into patient outcomes and improve approaches to future care.
