Case Study: Glenstone Museum

How Glenstone uses digital wayfinding to support sustainability and inclusivity

Problem

Glenstone Museum spans more than two hundred acres where art, architecture and nature are intertwined, creating a unique but complex environment for visitors to navigate. Printed maps are difficult to keep updated, generate unnecessary waste and do not align with the museum’s strong sustainability values. Glenstone also welcomes a diverse audience, including many Spanish-speaking visitors, and needed a way to ensure that everyone can explore the site confidently.

Goal

Provide visitors with accurate and environmentally responsible navigation that supports Glenstone’s commitment to sustainability while making the experience accessible to all visitors.

Approach

A digital wayfinding solution that replaces disposable printed materials with an interactive map accessible on mobile devices. The map can be updated instantly to reflect changes across the grounds, reducing waste and supporting the museum’s environmental ethos. To enhance inclusivity, the map is also available in Spanish, allowing more visitors to enjoy the museum with the same ease and independence. This creates a seamless, sustainable and welcoming visitor experience.

Great Visitor Experiences

The digital map helps visitors fully immerse themselves in Glenstone’s art, architecture and landscape by allowing them to navigate the grounds with ease. Clear, accurate directions guide people smoothly between pavilions, outdoor works and pathways, reducing uncertainty and enhancing the calm, contemplative experience the museum is known for.

Accessibility & Inclusivity

With a significant number of Spanish-speaking visitors, Glenstone offers the digital map in Spanish to ensure the experience is accessible and welcoming for everyone. The map also highlights stair-free and accessible routes, automatically guiding visitors with mobility needs along the most suitable paths. This supports a more inclusive visit for all guests, regardless of language or physical ability.

The Sustainable Solution

While many museums still rely on printed maps and leaflets, Glenstone’s digital map reduces waste and avoids the need for frequent reprints. Real-time updates allow staff to keep information accurate without producing new materials, reinforcing the museum’s strong commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable operations.
